Why carpet gets ripples in Florida

Carpet ripples when it gets looser than the room it's sitting in. The most common reasons we see around Jacksonville:

It was never power-stretched. A lot of carpet goes in with only a knee kicker, a tool you bump with your knee. It gets the carpet flat on day one, but it can't pull a whole room tight. A power stretcher braces against the far wall and pulls the carpet across the room. Skip it, and ripples show up months later.
Humidity. Carpet backing takes on moisture in a humid Florida summer and relaxes. Houses that sit closed up with the AC off (a vacant rental, a snowbird home, a house on the market) are the worst for this.
Heavy furniture dragged across it. Sliding a dresser or sectional pushes the carpet into a wave.
The pad is breaking down. Thin pad flattens out and crumbles, and the carpet loses its grip on the floor underneath.

When a restretch fixes it

A restretch is the right call when:

The carpet still looks good and you'd keep it if it were flat
The backing is solid when you lift a corner (not crumbly or powdery)
The pad underneath still has some cushion to it
The ripples are from a loose install, humidity, or moving furniture

Done right with a power stretcher, a restretch should hold. If a room keeps rippling again a few months after it's stretched, something else is going on, usually the pad or the backing, and it's worth having someone look before paying for another stretch.

When it's time to replace

Stretching loose carpet that's worn out doesn't make it look new. It just makes it flat and worn out. Replace when:

The carpet is matted flat in the walkways and won't fluff back up
There are stains or pet spots in most rooms
The backing is coming apart or turns to powder
Pets have soaked through to the pad (the smell lives in the pad)
It's builder-grade carpet that went flat after about three years
