Do I Need to Be Home for Flooring Installation?

Be There at the Start and at the End

You don't have to sit in the house all day watching the crew work. Most residential carpet jobs are done in one day, and the middle of that day is just installing.

But two moments matter: the first few minutes, and the last few. If you can be there for those, or have someone there who can make decisions for you, the job comes out the way you pictured it.

And if you can't be there at all, because it's a rental or you're selling from out of state, that works too. It just takes a little planning up front.

Install Day at a Glance

  • At the start: walk the rooms with the crew
  • Confirm seams and the strips between rooms
  • Point out anything fragile, loose, or off-limits
  • In the middle: you can leave
  • At the end: final walkthrough; issues fixed before we leave
  • Pets put up for the day
  • Can't be there? Lockbox, phone, and photos

Why the First Few Minutes Matter

Before the old floor comes up, the crew walks the job with you. This is where the small decisions get made, and they're a lot easier with you standing in the room than over the phone.

If anything on the night-before prep list didn't get done, this is also when we sort it out.

Why the Last Few Minutes Matter Even More

The final walkthrough is where most flooring complaints could have been fixed and weren't. A gap at the quarter round, a strip that sits high, a nail head showing: these are quick fixes while the crew and tools are still in your house. After the truck leaves, they're a second trip.

So walk every room with the installer before he goes. Look at the edges along the walls, the doorways, and the closets. Step on the strips between rooms. If something isn't right, say so. If it's something we can fix with what's on the truck, like a gap in the quarter round or a strip that needs resetting, we fix it before we leave. If it needs a part or material we don't have with us, we tell you what it is and schedule the fix.

If the crew moved your furniture, this is also when you check it's back where you want it.

Pets and Kids on Install Day

Install day means open doors, loud tools, sharp knives, and old tack strip and staples coming up with the carpet. It's no place for a curious dog or a toddler.

Put pets in a room we're not working in, in a crate, or out of the house for the day. Same for small kids. Our crews are used to barking dogs; they just can't have them underfoot. If the dog's room is one of the rooms getting new floor, plan where he'll go before we arrive.

Landlords, Out-of-Town Owners, and Sellers

Plenty of our customers are never at the house on install day. Property managers, landlords between tenants, and people selling a house from another state get floors done this way all the time. Here's what makes it work:

The measure can happen without you too, if someone can let us in. You get a written price and can pick your floor by phone and text. If you're getting a house ready to list, see our guide to flooring before selling a house.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be home during flooring installation?

Not all day. Be there, or have someone who can make decisions, at the start to walk the rooms and confirm seams and the strips between rooms, and at the end for the final walkthrough. Most residential carpet jobs in Jacksonville are done in one day, so the middle of the day is free.

Can flooring be installed while I am at work?

Yes. Once the crew has walked the job with you or your stand-in, you can leave. Come back for the final walkthrough. At Gator Carpet and Tile, anything we can fix with what is on the truck gets fixed before the crew leaves; if it needs a part we do not have with us, we schedule the fix.

What should I check at the final walkthrough?

Walk every room with the installer. Look at seams, the edges along the walls, closets, and doorways. Step on the strips between rooms. Check that the furniture is back where you want it. Point out anything now, while the crew and tools are still there.

Can a landlord or out-of-town seller get new flooring without being there?

Yes. Gator Carpet and Tile works on vacant rentals and homes being sold all the time. Leave a lockbox or door code, make the product and layout decisions at the measure, keep your phone on, and ask for before and after photos.

What do I do with my dog on flooring install day?

Put pets in a room that is not being worked on, in a crate, or out of the house for the day. Doors are open, and old tack strip, staples, and tools are on the floor. It is safer for the pet and faster for the crew.
