Do I Need to Move My Own Furniture for New Flooring?

Shane Webb By Shane Webb, Owner — Gator Carpet and Tile  •  30+ years Jacksonville flooring experience

Short Answer: Not the Heavy Stuff

You don't need to hire movers or call in a favor from your brother-in-law. On most jobs our crew moves the big pieces, lays the new floor, and puts everything back where it was.

What we ask you to handle is the small, breakable, and personal stuff. Those are the things that take a crew a long time to move carefully and take you a few minutes. That split keeps install day moving and keeps your things safe.

Here's how it works at Gator Carpet and Tile, what it costs, and what to clear before we show up.

Who Moves What

  • We move: sofas, tables, dressers, bed frames, bookcases
  • You clear: electronics, glassware, breakables, anything that fits in a 2'x2' box
  • You clear: closet floors and under-bed storage
  • We don't move: safes, pianos, musical instruments, pool tables, exercise equipment
  • Carpet and tile: furniture moving is $0.60/sq ft
  • Vinyl plank: furniture moving already included
  • We put it back where it was

What Our Crew Moves, and What It Costs

On carpet and tile jobs, furniture moving is an add-on at $0.60 per square foot. A 12x12 bedroom is 144 square feet, so moving the furniture in that room runs about $86. On a 1,000 sq ft carpet job, it's $600.

On vinyl plank, it's already in the price. Our vinyl plank pricing of $8–$17 per square foot is all-in: the material, the install, floor prep, quarter round, vapor barrier, the strips between rooms, and moving the furniture.

Either way, it shows up as a line on the written price you get at the free in-home measure, so you know the number before anything gets moved.

You're also free to move everything yourself and skip the charge. Plenty of customers do, especially on a single bedroom or an empty rental.

What You Should Clear Before We Get There

The simple rule: if it fits in a 2'x2' box, please move it yourself. Our crew handles the big furniture. The small, breakable, and personal things are yours.

Our prep checklist covers the rest of the night-before list, like pets, parking, and what to expect when the old floor comes up.

What Our Crew Won't Move

Some things aren't regular furniture, and our crew doesn't move them:

The heavy items on that list usually need a specialty mover, or a plan to floor around them. Mention them during the free in-home measure. It takes about 20 minutes, and it's a lot easier to plan for the piano then than to find it on install day.

Waterbeds have to be drained before anyone moves them. Appliances hooked to water or gas, like a fridge with an ice maker, a washer, or a gas range, should be disconnected by you or a pro ahead of time. Ask us at the measure which ones need to come out for your job.

Putting It All Back

Moving furniture out is only half the job. The part customers actually write about is whether it ends up back where it was, with nothing scuffed. Our crew puts it back in place before they leave, and you can check it during the final walkthrough.

One tip: snap a quick photo of each room before we start. And if you've always wanted the couch on the other wall, new floors are the perfect time to say so.
